Andreas
Scholl has said he would like to sing all the roles
created
by Handel for Francesco
Bernardi, called Senesino, of whom Johann
Quantz wrote: "He had a powerful, clear, equal and sweet
contralto
voice, with perfect intonation and an excellent shake [trill]...
He sang allegros with great fire, and marked rapid divisions, from the
chest, in an articulate and pleasing manner... His action was
natural
and noble... "

'Andreas Scholl brings a brilliant presence to the stage when he sings his first aria in Act I and this continues through to the final scene. His excellent voice is very fitting for Handelian roles and he performs with grace and energy. Scholl and Antonacci together are almost perfect and the third act is sublime.' from the gfhandel.org review by Kirk
McElhearn of the video recording

'Scholl was phenomenal. Despite his limited stage experience, he achieved a dazzling ebb and flow in his performance, almost cinematic in its subtlety, always subservient to the drama. His Caesar was a smooth talker, not bellicose by nature, always ready to flirt with Cleopatra -- or with the brilliant Finnish violinist Sirkka-Liisa Kaakinen, who played the good-naturedly competitive obbligato in Se in fiorito. Scholl's masterful rendition of Aure, deh, per pietà is unlikely ever to be bested in its musical daring and emotional depth.' |
