Edison Award 2010

Andreas Scholl's recording
ODE FOR THE BIRTHDAY OF QUEEN ANNE / DIXIT DOMINUS won the 2010 Edison Award in the Baroque Music category.

Decca

Andreas Scholl has moved from Harmonia Mundi to his former label, Decca Classics. The Decca release says this:

Andreas’ first two CD projects for Decca are suitably high-profile: in February he will record the title role in Handel’s Giulio Cesare with a stellar cast including Cecilia Bartoli, Philippe Jaroussky, and Nathalie Stutzmann with Les Arts Florissants conducted by William Christie; and in April Andreas Scholl will record a solo album, his first recording of Purcell, with Accademia Bizantina directed by Scholl himself. Both recordings will be released in Autumn 2010.

Christopher Roberts, President of Universal Music Group International, Classics and Jazz, says: “Andreas Scholl’s return to Decca is a source of pride and pleasure for the label and me personally. As today’s outstanding countertenor, he has earned a unique position among the vocal artists of his generation. We now look forward to many more years of valuable collaboration with Andreas.”

Andreas Scholl comments: “I'm looking forward to realizing my artistic plans with Decca, whose team will help me develop not only my repertoire ideas but also express my entire artistic personality. I embark on this exciting new challenge with great joy”.

Over the years of their productive and prize-winning association, Decca has released a series of extraordinary solo recordings by this celebrated German countertenor, including Arias for Senesino, for which he won the 2006 Classical Brit “Singer of the Year” award; Heroes, a disc of arias by Gluck, Handel, Hasse, and Mozart; Robert Dowland’s A Musicall Banquet; Vivaldi motets with the Australian Brandenburg Orchestra; Wayfaring Stranger, a selection of specially arranged English and American folksongs with the Orpheus Chamber Orchestra; and Arcadia, a collection of rare and unpublished cantatas by composers from Rome’s Arcadian Circle.

Paul Moseley, General Manager of Decca, comments: “It’s a delight and honour to welcome Andreas Scholl back to Decca where he belongs. Andreas is the King of modern countertenors, but more than that he is a great singer, musician and thinker – and he is now at the height of his powers”.

Cesare with Bartoli

Andreas Scholl will sing Cesare and Cecilia Bartoli will sing Cleopatra on a forthcoming CD for Decca of the Salle Pleyel concert performane of Handel's opera Giulio Cesare in Egitto. Full cast (Jaroussky, Stutzmann et al) as per Salle Playel, February 2010, with Les Arts Florissants under Willian Christie.

UPDATE  PROJECT POSTPONED? CANCELLED? Rumour.  Source.

UPDATE
"Too little rehearsal time"?  "Bartoli does not want Christie's LAF"?  "Bartoli may choose an Italian orchestra"?  This is (allegedly) Bartoli's personal project and apparently she is determined to do it, some time, somehow. Source.

OK, world - everybody cross your fingers.

Latest CD - March 2010

Songs of Myself - the songs of Oswald von Wolkenstein

Andreas Scholl says, 'This is music composed by a knight who lived at the end of the Middle Ages - historically a very interesting time. He was an interesting person in that he, himself, composed music and paid out a fortune to have a monk handwrite his songs in order to keep his music alive. What is so unusual is that he was a nobleman composing music; it was usual for lower class musicians to entertain noblemen. Oswald played and sang for his friends, who were nobles, knights and kings.
